Loved the movie, but the disk is messed up

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy in Blu-ray Packaging) (Blu-ray) The movie was fun and exciting. If you like old 1950's monster movies you will love it. There is a problem with the disk though. I could not sync the sound with the video. Allmy other blu-ray disks work fine. Other than this. GREAT MOVIE.

Cowboys and Aliens- A Very Fun Popcorn Flick

Cowboys and Aliens is about, well, cowboys who fight aliens. Happy?Okay, sure, there is more to it, but do I really have to go intodetail? Fine. A man named Jake wakes up and has no memory of who he isand he ends up getting himself into big trouble. Oh and when he wokeup, he found a brace around his arm that reminds me of the Pip-Boy 3000from Fallout 3 or Ben 10's omnitrix. The plot then turns, as we allexpected, into an alien invasion movie. How exactly can cowboys beataliens? This movie actually does this pretty realistically. It also hasa great cast. Two of my favorite actors, Daniel Craig and HarrisonFord, star as a duo in this movie and the beautiful Olivia Wilde alsostars with them. So we get James Bond, Indiana Jones (and Han Solo, musn't forget that now shall we?), AND Quorra from Tron Legacy???Sweet! And everyone does a great job and do really great in thiswestern setting. There are some people out there who said the aliens ruined the movie.Well, I don't think those people get this movie. It is simple, fun, anda good movie with some great performances. It tries to blend genres andit does it well. The movie is a western from the beginning and it staysthat way until the end. The movie is also a science fiction movie fromthe beginning and stays that way until the end. Nothing wrong withtrying something different.Cowboys and Aliens also has a great amount of cool action scenes.Seeing these cowboys (and cowgirl) fight for there lives against a foewith technology they can't even dream of at the time. It is all greatfun.I know I have made it seem as if this movie is a pure masterpiece, butagain, it is a popcorn flick. Sit down and watch it with a friend.Watch it in your spare time. It is just good fun. There are problems Ihaven't mentioned because they don't bother me much. The movie can draga bit and some of the CGI is unimpressive, but really, none of thisdetracts from what Cowboys and Aliens is. A fun film. I give Cowboysand Aliens a 7 out of 10.

Awesome title and weak execution threaten to bore you to death.

I don't remember having this set of plastic figures as a kid, but I'msure it would have been awesome! Cowboys on horses with winchesterrifle and 6-shooters, aliens in little space craft with cool blasters.Oh the battles little Fat Man would have had!! This roughly describedthe "OH YES!" reaction to the trailers and even just the idea ofCowboys & Aliens, but like most ideas out of Hollywood, someone ruinedit like a child ruined by hippie parents. There's not a lot to spoil plot-wise – once again, the trailers prettymuch finish all but the last 5 minutes of the film. Daniel Craig is atight-pants (VERY TIGHT) wearing cowboy who doesn't know who he is orwhere he came from (but he just has to remember…). He wanders in totown and immediately starts kicking locals around Bond style. He teamsup with a bumbling Sam Rockwell, gruff Harrison Ford (minus his prettypretty earring), and a mysterious Olivia Wilde who knows exactly whatis going on, but refuses to tell anybody. Suck it, Olivia, here'swhat's going on – aliens are taking people and they need to be stopped! Was that so hard? The majority of the film pretty much covers the"stopped" portion.I hated this movie. I had delicious beer to drink while hating it, andI still hated it! I had trouble putting my finger on it, but I think itcan be summed up with stupid plot, bad acting, and bad aliens. Theentire film had a single idea of "We gonna find them aliens and wegonna KILL 'EM!" No side plots, no intricacies of character. OnceDaniel Craig remembered everything, all mystery was put aside. Thetrailer promised nudity, but there was none… unless you're really in toshoulders. There were a lot of sexy nude shoulders. Ford and Craigshould have been a joy to watch, but they weren't. Even usually funPaul Dano seemed out of touch with his role, just whining and wanderingacross each frame. Actors need to be directed – they can't be left totheir own devices – and there was a genuine lack of any direction. It'snot like they had good dialog (you just have to remember…) to workwith, but Ford salvaged the Star Wars cheese writing somehow. Does thatmake George Lucas a good director, or has Ford just gotten feebleminded? The aliens need their own little paragraph. After all, they came allthe way to the wrong time period only to be beaten by apes with sticksand little pebbles. Super 8, while a good film, had a prettydisappointing alien. He was a terrifying beast compared the the weirdspace-frogs in C&A. Ooo, they're going to get me with their teenyhands! What does it take to get a good alien? I understand that you hadto show the aliens pretty early in order to get the story moving, butthey've gotta be impressive in that case. If I can't describe anythingother than "tiny hands that may grab at you in very close quarters,"you failed at Alien Design 101. There's a new The Thing coming out thisfall and I can only hope it keeps in line with John Carpenter'sunsettling masterpiece.Awesome title and weak execution take what could have been a fun,light- hearted romp into an over-serious film that threatens to boreyou to death. And probe your dead body to see if it you've got anymoney left.

High Hopes

I had really high hopes for this movie. It has a unique theme that sounded like it would be an interesting movie to watch. Somehow they managed to ruin it with poor acting and annoying characters. Seriously, the only believeable acting was from Harrison Ford's characters son. He played a spoiled brat very well.

Move over Clint Eastwood - DANIEL CRAIG is the new Cowboy

This movie was really good. I liked the way it was made. The directorhad all the necessary elements of a movie: Beginning, middle and end. Iwas pleased with the way Daniel Craig embraced the role of a cowboy. Hehad a lot of confidence and was literally perfect as the cowboy. I wasamazed how well he dealt with all of the people who were mean to him.One of the things I liked was when he was confronted by the meanoutlaws at the beginning. He was such a good fighter for somebody whodid not remember who he was. I was hoping that there would have beenmore scenes like that. Harrison Ford was in OK form and had quite anamazing accent. I liked it when he yelled at his son who, by the way,was a total jerk! I think that son is the same jerk from There Will BeBlood. Whoever that actor is - he is perfect for playing a guy youhate. As for the aliens, well they were pretty gross and resembled fishin a way. If there was really a way between the Cowboys and the Aliensthere is no way that the Cowboys would win in real life. I give thismovie two alien thumbs up!

Bouring

This is my first review! I always read the reviews, but (english is nomy native language) I never wrote one.I don't know what was exactly the problem whit this film, maybe I wasexpecting so much: a funny movie, with action and pretty good specialeffects, instead I found a boring western style story without anycomedy, with a little drama (whithout interest), whit a minimum ofdecent action (the last 20 minutes). The most error committed by thefilmmaker in my opinion... boring. Maybe the story was good, and theacting was good too, but is boring!I'll hope western movie lovers can enjoy this film, for me wasforgettable. Remember me Wild Wild West (horrible movie but whit toomuch comedy).

(2012-02-18 16:56:09)

Just plain ridiculous

Love Westerns; Love Syfi; Love Daniel Craig; Love Olivia Wilde; Still like Harrison Ford. Mix them all together and you have...'a mess' in my opinion, and hard to believe it ever got made. I watched the extras/behind the scenes shorts first and knew it was a stinker by the way the Actors were trying so hard to convince themselves this was going to be a great film--not! It could have been a decent Western (tell me Daniel Craig isn't Steve McQueen reincarnated) or fairly good 'Aliens are here to kill us movie', but in combo it totally didn't work for me. I only watched it all the way thru cause I pd $20 for it new from Target, but I'll never watch it again!

Cowboys, Indians, and Aliens...Oh, my!

Before ever seeing a trailer for Cowboys & Aliens, I heard rumors of its existence, and once I saw the trailer, I was sure that it was a movie I wanted to see. To put it lightly, I was extremely stoked to check this film out. I am a huge action and sci-fi fan: Predator, Aliens, Serenity, Firefly, Star Wars films (and this does NOT include the newer ones with Hayden Christenson), T1 and T2...and it's not often that I wait for a movie to come out. It's usually me grudgingly accompanying someone else to a movie they wanted to see; not the other way around. With Cowboys & Aliens, the situation was reversed. Unfortunately, (and isn't it always unfortunate to hock over the cash - especially with how expensive movies are now - and to be really excited and then tremendously disappointed?) what follows will be all the reasons why this movie earned only two stars from me. Enter Jack Lonergan, our mysterious main character, who has a rather serious dilemma: he just can't seem to remember who he is...Add to this the fact that he's got some high-tech hardware on his wrist that he can't remove (and he doesn't know where this came from) and that some less than hospitable townspeople aren't taking too kindly to this stranger's presence, and, of course, some aliens, and he has himself a big problem. The first action scene in the movie is awesome. I've seen a lot of action, and I'm not easily impressed but this scene just blew me away. I was sitting next to my brother, and we both just looked at one another and said whoa at the exact same time. And this is where my compliments end.In my opinion, Cowboys & Aliens has a really neat concept. The final product, though, is a less than spectacular experience. Mysteries abound in this action/sci-fi, and they bombard the viewer, one after the other after the other. So, the aliens are abducting people; I get that. Of course, everyone wants to know why, viewers and characters alike. And we also want to know what the aliens are after. Why Earth? Why in this area? I see these things as valid questions. But, amidst all of the explosions and whatnot, do we really need Jake Lonergan to have amnesia? Do we need him to forget his entire life, name and once-occupation included? This really isn't a finding oneself kind of movie. And, for some reason, Daniel Craig doesn't give his best performance. This is one of the little plot points that I thought dragged the film down. Another involves Olivia Wilde's character. In all honesty, I thought the plot revolving around her character was just plain laughable (despite the fact that she does a fairly well acting job). The thing about this movie is that I think it got bogged down with way too much. I think the initial idea of aliens invading and attacking during the time of the old west is a neat idea, but I also think it's a very difficult thing to pull off. The first mistake with Cowboys & Aliens was trying to make it more than it is. I think that as a simple action/sci-fi without too many plot turns, it would have done a lot better onscreen. As it is, though, even the later climactic battle seems goofy and a little too far-fetched to be believed. Talk about incredible odds. To say more, I'd have to spoil a few things, so I'm going to stop there. I don't think Cowboys & Aliens is horrible, and maybe if I give it another try a couple of years from now, perhaps my feelings for it will have changed. I would prefer to give it 2.5 stars, and can't quite bring myself to give it three, so I'm sticking to my guns - 2 stars for this one. Cowboys & Aliens isn't so bad that I recommend skipping it, but it also isn't a movie that I'll recommend seeing either.

A Review of Cowboys and Aliens

Edgardo's reviewI was looking forward to this film for some time. It's been promoted in trailers and ads for some many months now. And it didn't disappoint. It certainly was better than Battlefield L.A, which was more or less a recruiting video for the army. Obviously, a cross-genre bending film like Cowboys and Aliens is always going to have believability issues. After all, six shooters and rifles, bows and arrows, Indian lances, and yes, a lariat, are going to seem a feeble offense against a race of evil aliens with interstellar technology. But it all comes together, sort of. And sort of is good enough. It never falls into campy, self-mockery. And that's all you can ask for. So, bulldogging a space fighter is very improbable, even impossible, and it's doubtful there were outlaw gangs 50 member strong lurking in the Arizona Territory A few other improbabilities are lurking about in this film as well. But there is some very good acting going on here. It's always a pleasure to see Harrison Ford, and he makes the most of his role as the ex-army colonel turned Cattle Baron, Colonel Dolarhyde.Daniel Craig made his big time actor bones reprising the screen action icon legend James Bond. He does a more than adequate job here. Harrison Ford brings some humanity to his role as the complex Colonel; at once caring and responsible, at other times ruthless and ice cold. Olivia Wilde as the mysterious saloon girl plays an integral role here. She brings to all her work an air of inscrutability, leaving us wondering what lies behind that lovely visage. She conceals much, then when she reveals anything at all, its seems to be more of a revelation than it really is, in contrast to all her reticent air of mystery lead up. Adam Beach as Nat Colorado, semi-adopted son of Colonel Dolarhyde, gives a subtle performance; He straddles the cultural divide, and plays second-fiddle to Dolarhydes pusillanimous heir, a sniveling coward and bully. The audience really enjoys his comeuppance at the hands of Jake Lonergen (Daniel Craig). The Arizona Desert (really it was filmed in New Mexico) is one of the stars here. One of the most important features of any Western is the locale. Without it, the movie could be an Eastern! The canyons, rock formations, long vistas stretching for miles; cowboys, Indians, vaqueros, Apaches, prospectors, saloon girls, outlaws, barkeeps, what have you. We need these western types. It's been awhile since the last western; I can't reckon just when the last one was.. But I had a hankering for a whole heaping bowl of the stuff; and in that case Podner, it;'s been too long! (I'm channeling a brand of chili meat for some reason)."Cowboys and Alens" came at the right time. Let's not quibble about believability and other such piddling stuff. The direction's more than up to snuff. Remember along with the special effects in the film , there are things blowing up left and right, there are real horses and of course humans. John Favreau directed Iron Man, and also there was executive producer input as well from Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard. And the aliens were quite decent. All in all, give it 4 stars out of 5.

genre mix definitely worked for me

I was skeptical when I heard about this film, I mean, cowboys fighting space monsters? It seemed like too much of a stretch, especially since only a few Europeans were even dreaming that such things were possible. However, given the actors, I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a look-see while on a long airplane trip. And from the first moment, when the hero wakes with amnesia and a strange metal bracelet, the characters drew me into a much better-than-average story. It was even hard scifi without a whiff of fantasy, though what the aliens could do definitely would have seemed like magic or demons to the men of that time. The plot even has some good twists. D Craig makes a wonderful tough guy who deep down is grieving even if he can't remember why. He demonstrates his propensity to deadly violence right away, but there is something principled about it or seemingly so. After a quick imbroglio, he wanders into a town that is riven by a spoiled gunslinger, whose father is apparently a brutally evil rancher. Craig is also approached by a mysterious and beautiful woman, who seems to know a lot about him. When they seem ready to kill eachother, the town is attacked, setting them on an adventure together as Craig discovers the metal object is a weapon. Add Indians and a band of outlaws (who know Craig as a leader) into the mix and you begin to wonder if any of it is going to make sense. That the rest of the movie succeeds so well, maintaining a sense of mystery and awe at least in me, is a testament to an unusually intelligent script. One of the best themes in the film is how the humans band together, each bringing skills from their cultures and experience, to fight the baddies. It might sound silly, but it really works well. For example, the Indians give a potion to Craig that liberates his memory. I don't want to play the spoiler, so won't say anything more, but it is a raucous ride with great CGI.Warmly recommended. It won't be what you expect, if you like hard scifi to begin with, that is.

(2012-02-16 10:31:31)

Pointless Plot

I wanted to see this movie only because Harrison Ford was in it. It was slow, long and boring at times. Overly bloody, body parts flying everywhere, horse's heads getting ripped off.. It was quite gorey. It was a novel concept gone typical, "Aliens killing humans and destroying everything..because they can".I was expecting a better story, more info on the aliens, like who, what, when and where? But it's always good to see Harrison Ford...one of my favs. I think they relied too much on CGI and should have paid for better writers.

James Bond meets Han Solo in this fun filled Western/Sci-Fi.

Based on the comic book of the same name, by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg,Cowboys & Aliens is an exciting adventure for sci-fi and western fansalike. The storyline for this movie was expectantly simplistic. The time andplace is in the late 1800s of Arizona, and the aliens come down to tryto conquer Earth. To the best of my knowledge, an alien and cowboy confrontation hasnever been seen before in the cinema. Surely we have seen sort of ahybrid with Star Wars, Serenity, and Star Trek. But, never actuallycowboys mixed in with alien lifeforms.I can totally see the merit in why some critics were displeased by thissci-fi/western. Even with such a robust cast like that of Daniel Craig(James Bond), Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones/Han Solo), Olivia Wilde, andSam Rockwell, the plot is left open with too many holes. Plot holesoccasionally work in films, but this one was just blatantly annoying. You'll know exactly what I mean if you see this movie. And if you'reable to ignore those open-ended questions, the movie is surprisinglyenjoyable.Yet another midnight feature for me this summer and the audience is yetagain the same! We hear a lot of laughter at the dialogue and HarrisonFord received a tremendous applause upon his character's firstappearance. I was in complete agreement with the consensus of theaudience.Harrison Ford reminded me of Han Solo so much. I loved it. I'm a muchbigger Star Wars fan than Indiana Jones, so in turn didn't see much ofJones; but I know he was in there somewhere. And, obviously DanielCraig was your James Bond figure with a Western-twist. Both actors dida splendid job. Olivia Wilde was a delight too. The iconicity of bothFord and Craig was uncanny. The director was Jon Favreau (Iron Man 1 & 2, actor in Swingers), and Ithought he did a valiant job once again. I enjoyed how he approachedthe physicality of battle between the aliens, American Indians, andcowboys. With the thought of never seeing it done before, it was allvery plausible. We usually see confrontation displayed beside abundantamounts of CGI-generated special effects, and for the characters inCowboys & Aliens, it was not the case.I was also highly pleased before this movie that it would not be shownin 3-D. Favreau was very specific about how Western films are not meantfor 3-D. So awesome! "That would be like filming in black and white andcolorizing it" ~Jon Favreau.I will say that I was hoping for more aliens in this flick. It's about70% Western and 30% Sci-Fi.7/10 Stars. (It's 8 Stars if ya completely ignore the plot.)

A rubbish title for such a good movie.. Wait.... oh no it isn't

I didn't expect much from this movie but it sounded like goodlight-hearted fun. From the start you are met by great performances, anintriguing story and great action. Harrison Ford is at home as acantankerous land owner and Craig does what he does best (acts hard andtakes a good kicking)Some advice. When they go after the aliens stop watching and make upyour own ending. With some imagination you will feel like you have seena great movie.Because from then on it feels like a Hollywood executive has walkedpast the set and thought 'hey maybe I can help with this.'. Everythingthat is rubbish about Hollywood alien invasion movies is hurriedlycondensed into a few minutes of puke-inducing sentimentality. In the middle of battle everything stops so issues are resolved, unrequented love settled, bridges built to span mistrust and racism. Iexpected General Custer and Sitting Bull to run on and starthigh-fiving. Then battle resumes with new vigour and all of a suddenthe previously bullet-proof aliens are felled with sticks and stones. If you don't take my advice and switch off early make sure you have abucket to hand.

Ronald Reagan said once.......

""In our obsession with antagonisms of the moment, we often forget howmuch unites all the members of humanity. Perhaps we need some outside, universal threat to make us recognize this common bond. I occasionallythink how quickly our differences worldwide would vanish if we werefacing an alien threat from outside this world"- Ronald Reagan Sep 211987 United Nations.Essentially this is what this movie is about, Cowboys, Indians, Outlawsand the Law abiding.... all forgetting there differences and joiningforces to defeat the alien invaders. The trouble with this movie is that it isn't believable....... not somuch that an alien invasion isn't believable but the Cowboys' reactionto the "aliens".......no real sense of "shock and awe"......no deepquestions about where these beings had come from......hell even thesmall boy who had a close encounter acts as if nothing THATextraordinary has happened to him.The other big flaw in the movie is the ending where the space shipresembles the Saturn 5 rocket that sent men to the moon......any onethat has any knowledge of space flight will know that any ultraadvanced "aliens" that visit Earth will NOT be using rocket fuel intheir craft......If they did they would NEVER reach their destination,as the distances involved in interstellar space travel are so vast!.......a pretty bad school boy error by the film maker of this stinkerof a movie! Avoid!

Plays it straight

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) (Amazon Instant Video) Not having read anything about it, I had assumed that this would be a comedic affair. The flippant title does seem to suggest that. When it began seriously I thought "well, the makers are for sure not going to be able to resist gags." I was pleased that they played it completely straight. And when you think about it, the premise is completely plausible. Would visitors or invaders who were untold hundreds or thousands of years ahead of us be any less likely to arrive in the the 1800's than in the 1900's or 2000's? Worth the rental, in my opinion.

(2012-02-13 14:21:04)

So odd that I liked it

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) It is a wonderfully odd idea that has been brought to the screen very effectively - everyone is quite deadpan - no winking at the camera. As a result, it worked for me. A mix of Western and Sci Fi cliches that just works as far as I am concerned. The aliens are appropriately terrifying, the cowboys appropriately brave, the Native Americans appropriately noble. And certainly enough surprises to make it entertaining throughout. Artfully takes the cliches and turns them into a unique and interesting film.

(2012-02-13 12:55:40)

Entertaining

This review is from: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Version) [HD] (Amazon Instant Video) This movie had an interesting variation on the traditional western flick. Even though the movie had plenty of action, it sort of dragged at times. For example, the ending lasted nearly 10 minutes, with at least three closure scenes. Overall, I would recommend it.

Predictable Boring and long

I did not expect much out of this movie; after all it is called"Cowboys and Aliens. At the same time it had some recognizable actorsin it, so I thought it may be worth watching. I saw the movie on aflight so the alternative was reading the flight magazine. From thestart the movie was predictable; it just went through the motions tothe point that half way through I was counting the minutes. Thecharacters were two dimensional and boring, (seen it all before) aquarter through you see on the back ground the usual token tough gunwielding female with perfect makeup skin and hair, to satisfy thefeminist lobby. It has become so tiresome in action movies there isalways the token tough female, they are so out of place that it takesall credibility out of the movie and story. The story has so many holesin it, the writers don't even try to justify anything that happens. Putit this way if I had paid for this movie I would ask for my money back.Waste of time. I give it a generous one out of ten.

The fusion of western and sci-fi turns out to be an incredible success

Jon Favreau proves to me (once again) that he is an expert in what heworks with. Being a major fan of Iron Man 1 & 2, I thought this projectcould do no wrong, especially since Spielberg signed on to the projectas well. And thank god, I was right.Cowboys & Aliens embraces both sci-fi and western, Favreau truly foundthe perfect balance between those two genres. The cinematography, actually, pretty much everything visual about the film, was absolutelyterrific, pure eye candy. It also knows when to be silly and when to beserious, which is a good thing. One of my biggest fears was the thoughtof the movie drowning in cheesiness and embarrassing lines, but therewas only a few of them, luckily. Like I said, the balance betweensilliness and seriousness is phenomenal, just like the Iron Man films. While it's fun to think of it as "007 meets Indiana Jones" I mustadmit, Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford were really good as Jake Lonerganand Woodrow Dolarhyde, respectively. Not for a moment were I remindedof some of their previous great roles, but only the two roles they wereplaying in this movie.Cowboys & Aliens was something of a risk, but in the end, Favreaupulled it out, and made it one of the most enjoyable films of the year.Overall, I can't recommend this film enough if you love cowboys andaliens. Unless you were ready to choke yourself as soon as you heardabout the movie, the average movie-goer should have nothing to worryabout.Moose finds this film worthy of a 10.
