Spellbinding! Great Story and Characters! Great Action!

This review is from: Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Two-Disc Edition Blu Ray + DVD/Digital Copy Combo) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) First of all, the film itself. I didn't catch this in theaters but I was aware of all the positive buzz, and I'm a big fan of the original Planet of the Apes movie (don't really care much about the sequels), and I already thought this movie looked interesting. I've watched it twice, and I must say that I really LOVED it the 2nd time. This movie is a terrific reboot/origin story for this series, and while it pays homage to the original, it still manages to be its own film. I loved how focused the movie is; the story is simple but very well thought out and executed. The film doesn't get bogged down in unecessary subplots. And the character of Caesar (especially thanks to Andy Serkis) is one of my favorite charatcers in any film. The CGI is excellent; of course you can tell the apes aren't real, but the CGI is still so lifelike. Also, the fact that they used motion captures made the apes feel like real creatures. Some people might say that this is a cash-in on the older series, but it isn't. It's a new take on the story and a great one at that. It's definitely one of the best films of 2011.As for the Blu-Ray itself, it's very crisp and clean and the colors pop out at you. The sound is great. The biggest selling point is the extra, since there are some great ones here. There are many featurettes showing the making of the film, from the motion capture performances to the score of the film, etc. One of my favorite features is a mini-documentary about the great apes, covering chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. These animals are beautiful and fascinating, and the viewer really gets to learn some amazing facts about them if they didn't know them already. All in all, this is a great Blu-Ray release of a great movie. It was a blind buy for me and I wasn't disappointed. The Transformers films could learn a few things from this one.

Two words: Andy Serkis!

Okay, so this was a good film. It was good as I expected it to be. Thisis a much better film than Tim Burton's dreadful Planet of the Apes. Sothe synopsis is basically this. James Franco is a scientist developinga cure for Alzheimer's. Before he can try this cure on humans, he usesmonkeys, apes as his test subjects to see how they'll respond to thissupposed cure. Enter Caesar, who is the smartest ape out of them all.Quickly Caesar's brain begins to operate at a higher level and this iswhere problems arise. The smarter he becomes he begins to realise thathumans aren't perfect and his faith in them begins to diminish. He thengets locked up in a ape prison for harming someone, is mistreatedwhilst he is there, then starts and leads an ape revolution, then takesthe fight to the humans. When I saw the first two trailers, Idefinitely wanted to see this film. It's not the surprise movie of thesummer but I found it highly enjoyable and thought provoking.James Franco is comfortable in his role as the scientist looking for acure. Freida Pinto does well and offers support to Franco as does JohnLithgow who puts in a convincing performance as an Alzheimer'ssufferer. David Oyelowo is reliable as Franco's money grabbing boss,Draco from Harry Potter does alright as an idiotic zoo keeper and BrianCox (who I thought was miscast and wasted) does what is required of himand that's it. But he's still one heck of an actor.I wouldn't have enjoyed this movie as much as I did if it wasn't forAndy Serkis. If you're looking for the ultimate character actor, it'sAndy Serkis. He is absolutely brilliant in this as the ape Caesar.Using motion capture technology, Serkis mimics an ape's movements to atee. I honestly think it's one of the best performances of the year.Obviously as an ape, he hardly has any dialogue, but his actions andmannerisms are bang on! Undoubtedly Caesar is the star of the film andwithout Serkis' portrayal as Caesar the film would not be as good. Set pieces are solid and well directed, especially the last actionscene at the end on the Golden Gate Bridge. Trying my best not to givespoilers here! Visual effects are mindblowingly good! WETA, the sameteam behind Avatar really does a great job with the ape interaction andmotion capture. At times I had totally forgotten that these weren'treal apes. As I said this is a good film, but it's not perfect. It's about 100minutes, but it felt longer. Some scenes drag and are unnecessary.Dialogue is not exactly brilliant, but the actors do well with whatthey're given. Brian Cox being miscast annoyed me somewhat. It almostshowed lack of respect for an actor of his calibre. But I guess he'sjust collecting another cheque. I doubt he was fully invested in this,he sure didn't look it. All in all The Rise of the Planet of the Apesis worth the release and I recommend you see it. Andy Serkis reallyshines as Caesar in this and it's a performance worth seeing on the bigscreen.

A worthy prequel to the original 1968 movie

This is easily one of the better blockbusters of the summer of 2011. Ofall of the mindless summer blockbusters, this one is the leastmindless. There is a large cast of well-known and accomplished actorsin this movie, but for the most part, you could say that they are doingcameo roles, as the focus is squarely on the apes.We went and reviewed the original movie after seeing this movie. I saythat this is a worthy prequel to the original 1968 movie, becausethroughout the movie they pay homage to and try to explain how eventsled up to the original movie. Obviously they explain how apes becameintelligent. But there are other quick little touches too, such asexplaining how the apes can ride horses. They showed the manned spacemission that gets lost in space which is obviously the mission thatCharlton Heston was on in the original movie, the ship even looks likethe original. They paid homage to Heston by showing one of his westernmovies in a TV screen in the background briefly. They showed that anengineered virus was responsible for giving the apes intelligence, butwas also the same virus that killed humans. They showed how this viruswas spread throughout the world by a pilot who happened to be aneighbour of the doctor (James Franco) who developed the virus and wasthe owner of Caesar the chimp.Throughout this movie there's a lot to like. Much better than the 2001Tim Burton/Mark Wahlberg remake. There are some interesting connectionsbetween these three movies and Harry Potter, despite the 4 decades inbetween them. In the 1968 movie, the astronauts initially thoughtthey've landed on a planet orbiting the star Bellatrix. Bellatrix was acharacter played by Helena Bonham Carter in the Harry Potter movies.Helena Bonham Carter was also in the Tim Burton 2001 Planet of the Apesremake. Tom Felton who plays Dodge Landon in this movie, also playedDraco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies.

Human Emotions

This review is from: Rise Of The Planet of the Apes (Amazon Instant Video) It's a nice movie, i liked to see human emotions on apes. The CGI is very good and blend very well it reality.

So intense!

When I saw the trailer of this movie in the theaters I was like "hmm, monkey movie, next!" But because of my father, I decided to go check itout. It turns out this movie is not bad at all, In fact is is actuallyquite interesting. What really made me like this movie is Ceasar andthe journey he took to find where he truly belongs (really intense). This brought movie almost brought me to tears (not that it neverhappened before) but what was truly amazing was that this movie gave mechills. I definitely advise people who deemed this movie uneventful togo see this movie for themselves. Girls if your just watching thisbecause of "Draco" you'll soon forget about him and focus on thestory/apes.

The standout blockbuster of 2011.

The unlikely standout blockbuster of 2011, ROTPOTA is one of those rarebeasts that successfully merges jaw-dropping action with intelligent,thought-provoking themes. This is no dumb fun – although it's goodenough to be if that's all you want from it – but instead a stimulatingtrip back to where it all began for the ascension of the apes (as seenin the original Planet of the Apes). The human cast are all terrific, especially James Franco as the thoughtful scientist, but it's theinferior primates (or are they?) that are the real standouts. A perfectconvergence of performance by Andy Serkis (who also played Gollum andKing Kong) and photorealistic motion-capture CGI, Caesar – thegenetically enhanced ape we follow from birth – is a memorable, affecting and powerful character. The gap between live acting andmo-cap acting is no more.

Love this work.

Brilliant, justified, impressive, fast paced, awesome music, heartfelt, surprising, raises the bar, well directed, well edited, incredible CGI,top sound design, realistic sets, expansive scope, deserving end forthe human race, faultlessly realized intelligence, all apes cast wellas ensemble, makes one happy that Hollywood is still able to bring outstronger material amongst the crap, perfect cinematography, cohesivegrade, connect to the main character, amazing flying camera shots, totally impressive development of character, wanted more, proud of theapes, CGI character facial expressions are out of this world, almostsolid logic, did not hurt my ears, exciting, satisfying, entertaining, thought provoking, mesmerizing film.

Monkey see, Monkey don't.

So what can be said of the latest reboot in the Planet of the Apessaga? Well in a nutshell 'Rise…' is pretty poor, while trying to find acure for Alzheimer's Will Rodman accidentally increases brain power inhis pet monkey who goes mad and has to be locked up, monkey doesn'tlike being locked up and so starts to get the other monkeys to rise upwith him in order to go and do some damage to the city. In a worldwhere only the monkeys age and harry potters nemesis is a monkeytormentor we get everything from homo-erotic monkey love to a snakes ona plane style line 'oh you monkeys' delivered seemingly without irony. With self-sacrificing silver-backs to an orangutan that is fluent insign language the primates are OK when they finally go on the rampagebut it takes so long to get there that by the time they were beating upthe police I'd already long lost interest. Lots of reviews I read alsopraised the set piece on the golden gate bridge saying how brilliant itwas! What the hell, they roadblock the bridge to stop the monkeysgetting past, but guess what they monkeys still get past! But how Ihear you cry? How is that possible? Well by swinging underneath, oh mygod that is just brilliant, monkeys swinging who would have thought! It's so breathtakingly amazing, not. I'm pretty sure that 98% of thisfilm is CGI including James Franco who had to wear a motion capturesuit for all his scenes then was painstakingly animated back in by ateam of fifty computer experts to get him to look just like JamesFranco; you can see where the money was spent. One of the most bizarrethings about the whole movie was the end because well it just stopsdead in its tracks. I couldn't believe it when the credits started toroll; it was Jurassic Park 3 all over again, is that it? Seriously?Where's the end? So if you want me to save you some money/time it goeslike this: over an hour of boring stuff about chemicals and experimentswith the odd monkey, being locked up dreaming of the outside moremonkeys, one gorilla, loads of mad monkey action, a few gorillas and anorangutan and stop.

These Apes are well worth rising to go and see on the big screen.

After the initial success of the original Planet of the Apes back in1968 with Charlton Heston (which I saw only a couple of years ago andthoroughly enjoyed) they did three sequels preceding it which weren'tbad through into the early 70s. Then in 2001 tragically Tim Burtontried a remake/reboot with Mark Walghberg at the helm. For me as it wasseen generally by the public it was absolutely awful. Finally afteranother decade director Rupert Wyatt has made a second attempt at areboot/remake and I am pleased to say he has carried it off with greataplomb. This version first sees good-intentioned scientist Will Rodman (JamesFranco) doing experiments on genetically enhanced Apes to try and finda cure for Alzheimer's which his father Charles (John Lithgow) has. Heends up taking home a baby ape that he calls Caeser (Andy Serkis) whenit's mother dies after being killed by security guards who thought shewas going on the rampage while really she was protecting Caeser. Whilsttaking care of Caeser Will discovers a drug within the Apes that willhelp cure his father as he also teaches Caeser how to socialise. Healso develops intelligence (a side effect of the drug). Meanwhile Willends up dating vet Caroline (Frieda Pinto) who loves Apes as much asWill. As years go by Will's father starts to deteriorate again as the drugbegins to wear off and an incident with Caeser defending Charlesagainst an abusive next door neighbour gets the Ape catered off to asanctuary with other Apes where Caeser is bullied by two guards, onebeing Dodge Landon (Tom Felton who played Malfoy in the Harry Potterfranchise).Due to the cruel treatment Caeser receives at the hands of these humansand feeling neglected by Will he establishes himself as the alpha-maleand plans a daring and well co-ordinated escape for freedom with theother Apes to rule over the humans (what will eventually be the case inthe sequel). First off the CGI of the Apes themselves is absolutelyjaw-dropping. Forget men in monkey suits in the original and thesequels that proceeded. These apes look - are actual apes, you wouldn'tthink that they are just special effects. It's a testament to givingthis film realism as they move like real apes. The second biggeststrength is the central performance by Andy Serkis as Casear, it alsoreflects the many strengths of silent movie making as Casear staysvirtually wordless. Serkis gives a sensational central performance thatdeserves at least an Oscar nomination. Through Caesar's movements andfacial expressions and when he finally speaks we feel everything hefeels tenderness and love at Will looking after him and pain and ragewhen being mistreated by humans. It is bravo piece of acting and theaudience feels for Casear's plight the whole way. It's unfortunate that the humans fair less well mostly. The only oneswho really make any impact is Tom Felton as the nasty guard who makesthe most of his menace in a cracking performance and Lithgow as Charleswho gives an accurate and sensitive portrayal of one suffering fromAlzheimer's. Even then they have little character development.Unfortunately James Franco and Frieda Pinto are nothing more thancardboard cut outs as they have severely unwritten roles (though theygive decent performances). Franco though has more to do for the firsthour as the screenplay sets him up well but loses interest in him inthe last hour where he does nothing except fall for the expendable vetwho could have been cut from the film altogether as she was veryforgettable as a character and run hopelessly after Casear. Also someof the plot is a little too sloppy with a few glaring plot holes. Howcome Will's neighbours delay complaining to the authorities about thechimp until it is fully grown, when it has behaved scarily for years? How come Will waits so long before telling his boss about themiraculous properties of his drug? Did they somehow slip his mind? Andwhy does Will's boss – a poorly written corporate type profit obsessed- change abruptly from ultra-cautious about animal testing toridiculously reckless? However putting those faults aside there are other positives going forthis film apart from Serkis's performance and the CGI. The actionsequences namely the climax is well worth waiting for, which takesplace on the Golden Gate Bridge is excellently choreographed andexciting to watch with beautiful cinematography from Andrew Lesnie whoprevious work included Lord of the Rings. There are faults with Rise of the Planet of the Apes but not enough tostop me enjoying it all the way through. This is a worthy addition tothe other versions and a terrific first film for a reboot that iscertainly worthy of a sequel. These Apes are well worth seeing on thebig screen. I'm really looking forward to seeing the continuation ofthe story and seeing how this promising new franchise will continue todevelop.

No sound = ripped off!

This review is from: Rise Of The Planet of the Apes (Amazon Instant Video) I rented this movie in HD along with Cowboys and Aliens using my Roku and neither had any audio. I was able to view (and hear) the trailer before I rented. Ripped off, what a disappointment.

Whatever happened to profundity? Another pale remake...

I've been watching the original Planet of the Apes movies lately, and after you get past the cheesy datedness and Heston's atrocious acting there is actually a huge amount of social commentary in them- everything from critiques of bellicosity, militarism, totalitarianism, racism, and the human tendency to subjugate others. Fictional parallels to real world situations of police states, internment camps, segregation, and military aggression run throughout.Compare that to the thematically bland "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" that was still advertised as "a cautionary tale" even though it had little to no social commentary. The apes in the modern version were made intelligent by an engineered virus, because even Evolution is too prickly of a subject for the summer blockbuster crowd. And rather than widespread institutionalized subjugation, the apes break out of one particular facility where they are mistreated by a few people. The implied downfall of the human race in this new version was also attributed to the experimental virus that goes awry, rather than the intentional use of nuclear weapons. The titular planet in this case is more of a "woopsie!" than a direct result of humankind's poor decisions or flawed nature. Yeah the effects were good, and there are some surprisingly poignant emotional moments, but any higher theme or message has been purged from the plot. In conclusion, movies today are WEAK, and all of these "remakes" and "reboots" diminish the original films rather than making them relevant again.

Good in different ways than I was expecting.

**** May be spoilers below. Only little things. I will not put anything big or important!!!!****This was a neat movie. I either have never seen or do not remember the originals, so I can not compare it. The movie is about a scientist who is trying to find a cure for Alzheimer's. Which is a disease that his father has. He tests the cure out on Monkeys, to see what happens to them. He finds that it makes them much smarter and gives them the ability to do things that they could not do before. The group that is giving him the money towards his research comes in to hear about what he has and needs. He will show them how the medicine works by showing them what the test monkey can do. Something happens and the monkey goes crazy. It tares apart the offices and starts to attack them. They have no choice but to kill the ape and all the others that they are doing the tests on. The monkey that went crazy may leave something behind that carries the advantage that the new medicine gave him. The scientist takes the monkey home for a short time at first, until he can find a place to keep it from being killed. Years go by and the monkey has grown. Through out the movie you see the monkey starts wondering where it came from and it all it is thought of is an animal. Eventually, the monkey may go somewhere else to live and decides that it is time to free himself and the others. There you go, that is the movie. You really feel the emotions of the monkey or all of the monkeys. They did a good job of showing you that some wanted peace and freedom, while others wanted power and control. The monkeys actually seem to have personalities. You will be surprised by the fact that you feel like you know them and understand what they want and why they are angry. It is like they are people. Very well done in that regard. The problems that I had with the movie are these. All the main action in the movie. Be it the monkeys attacking or escaping, happens in the last 20 or 30 minutes. The first main part of the movie is all about how the problems started and what happens from them. I still thought the movie was a lot of fun and worth seeing. But this is one of those movies that I could watch once and it could and probably would have been a smarter choice to see it at home. If you think about it, it is a good thing that they did not make a movie that was all apes killing people. They took the time to build up to what would happen. Another thing that kind of bothered me was this. For anything that the monkeys did or would do. The things that you know would have happened to them did not. I do not want to give anything away. It was just a weak, strange ending. The movie was slow, fast and action packed, then back to slow. If you are wanted to see 100% fast paced action, this may not be for you. But, my mom, step brother and I did enjoy it. So it was good for that. This is not a movie I could ever see myself buying. Once was enough for me. It was a good movie with a little less of this and that than I thought there would be.

Implausibilities Galore

This review is from: Rise Of The Planet of the Apes (Amazon Instant Video) I bought this movie from Amazon.com because of all the good reviews I found on RottenTomatoes.com.On the plus side, if you can ignore all the implausibilities in the plot, "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" is a fun romp of a movie. The actors do a fine job. The special effects are well done. And the premise that a newly developed drug could greatly increase the intelligence of apes is fascinating. That's why I gave the movie three stars. On the negative side, there are so many implausibilities in the film that it's hard to stay engaged.I don't want to spoil the movie for others by giving away too much of the plot. So here are just a few examples of the implausibilities: 1) A man could take a Chimpanzee from a highly controlled and regularly caged environment into his home, and the Chimp would cause no damage but immediately adapt to living in a house. 2) For years, a man could have a Chimpanzee living in his home and take the Chimp for drives in his car without his neighbors' noticing or complaining to the authorities. 3) A Chimp can climb Redwood trees. Chimps, other apes, and monkeys swing from branches. Redwood trees do not have branches that are anywhere near the ground, as is shown in the film. Chimps can no more scale a branchless tree trunk than humans can. It's a shame that the filmmakers weren't more meticulous in crafting this film. Most, if not all, of the gaffes could have been avoided. The Chimp could at first have run amok in the man's house and gradually acclimated himself to it. The man could have lived in a rural setting with no neighbors nearby. A device to climb Redwood tree trunks could have been invented by the Chimp as a problem-solving feat. That would have shown the Chimp's ingenuity. Why the filmmakers didn't problem-solve the script is a mystery. If the plot had been more plausible, it could have been a fine film. However, if you can turn off the reasoning part of your brain, "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes" will be a fun romp for you.

The Trailer Basically Tells Us the Story, But the Film was still Very Good

At first, I did not plan to watch "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Iactually felt that the preview trailer already pretty much tells us thewhole story already. This is a movie that will give us the explanationhow a race of super-intelligent apes had over-run the Earth andreplaced humans as the dominant species which was the scenario in the1968 classic film "The Planet of the Apes" (with Charlton Heston andRoddy McDowall). While I was watching, I found that yes, my fears about the trailertelling us too much were not unfounded. However, in the movie itself,we see the human back story of the Rodmans and their relationship withthe mutant ape Caesar so much better. We see how the worsening dementiaof his Dad (John Lithgow) drives scientist Will Rodman (James Franco)to develop a virus-based anti-Alzheimer's medication. Very interestingand intelligent. This story line covers the origin of the super-IQ andsuper-abilities of the apes, as well as sows the seeds of the virusthat will eventually eradicate the human race. We also get to see andhear Tom Felton (sans his Slytherin robes) deliver a classic movie linein tribute to the first Apes movie.Watching the whole film also makes us admire the talent of one AndySerkis even more as he was able to convey the emotion of the centralape Caesar with nary a word for majority of the film. His eyes, thatstare, his body language, say it all. Caesar's final moment with Willwas amazing and can send chills down anyone's spine, a real screenmoment. If there is justice, Andy Serkis should at least be nominatedfor a Best Actor Oscar even though we do not really see his real faceand body on screen. Being on screen for almost the whole film, Serkishas even surpassed his acclaimed motion-capture performance as Gollumin "The Lord of the Rings" films.

Cgi simians rule...

This "reimagining" of CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES owes as muchto the telemovie A COLD NIGHT'S DEATH and PROJECT X (and 28 DAYS LATERand 12 MONKEYS, among others) as it does to the Arthur P. Jacobs films.Much of what we see here was unimaginable in Jacobs's day- which isexactly what a "reimagining" should strive to do. RISE OF THE PLANET OFTHE APES goes where no Apes movie has gone before, with what JohnCollier in his 1931 novel HIS MONKEY WIFE called "the suggestion thatthe kingdom of Heaven and Earth was at hand." In a world where amonkey's head was successfully transplanted to another body (in theearly 1970s, by a Dr. White) and where signing apes like Koko thegorilla have actually developed their own words (and where, we've justlearned, 2700 new records for high temperatures have been broken inJuly of this year alone), ANYTHING is possible. "An opportunity sooncame," Collier wrote in 1931... (On a field trip, once, my classvisited the Washington Zoo. There, I saw a caged gorilla. I walked upto the bars and stood staring in at him. He froze; snarled- and thenbegan screaming at the top of his lungs and bouncing off the walls. Itwas the scariest thing I think I've ever seen in my life. Take it fromme: the LAST thing you want to see is an enraged gorilla all up in yourgrille...) One of the more curious aspects of RISE OF THE PLANET OF THEAPES is that, for all the carnage, it's almost BLOODLESS (unlike theoriginal version, which was considered kiddie fare and therefore a bitTOO bloody). All things considered, it's a worthy "reimagining." GreatApes, indeed.

Standard "Action Flick" Fare

If you like mindless entertainment and you're prepared to just "go withit" and suspend disbelief no matter what the movie, or Fox, may throwat you, then Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the movie for you, andyou should skip the rest of this review.People will likely call this an "action flick," or an "effects flick,"which, as often happens, means the plot is rife with a great deal ofsilliness. Such as the million dollar research lab that doesn't noticeone of their test chimps is pregnant until it gives birth. Such as the"wonder drug" that makes one (1) chimp "smarter," so therefore we'reall set to go into clinic trials on humans suffering from Alheimer's.Such as the scientist who decides to test out the untested drug on hisown (human) father, because, hey, Dad's practically a basket case, sowhat harm could it do?Overall, the film seems uninspired and continues the modern trend ofsubstituting eye-candy for creative thinking. It doesn't really feelvery science-fictiony either. The world setting is indistinguishablefrom the real-life modern-day Earth we all know, except for a TV newsbroadcast about a manned space flight mission to Mars. The "science"perpetrated by the film's protagonist mostly takes the form of computerdisplays showing lots of unreadable charts and graphs and data andstuff, which is not terribly convincing. The interactions between the various apes in the film do getinteresting, round about the middle of the film. The apes all seem tomove "realistically," at least to my zoologically untrained eye. Butthat alone is hardly enough to carry the film, especially since theclimactic action sequence at the end of the film appears to have beendesigned by graphics effects people, without reference to anyoneconcerned with such arcana as "logic" and "plot."

(2012-02-13 22:07:18)

Though Provoking and Mesmerizing

This film is a worthy remake (or pre-make) for us to seriously take into consideration. With cloning, germ warfare and genetic manipulation now being a reality, it begs the question, what if something was to go wrong. The base for the storyline is quite plausible, how far are the scientist willing to go to cure diseases? What is really happening today behind closed doors in the R & D departments of mega pharmaceutical companies? What I find impressive about this film is the "wow" factor that it generates each time there is even the most subtle, but yet astounding breakthrough in Caesar's intelligence. He proves himself to be a strategist and a thinker, while allowing everyone only to know the extent of his true intelligence on a need to know basis. It is quite worthy of the viewing and it will leave you with a satisfied, yet a bit disturbed feeling, realizing that sometimes, experiments may go wrong, and what would be the true damage in such a sceanario.

A True Slap in the Face for Planet of the Apes Fans.

Everything that made Planet of the Apes big is guaranteed not to be inthis movie. In fact this is no Planet of the Apes, though the title mayfool you. This is even more retarded than a Star Trek film with babyteens as the leads, and who would've thought that would be possibleafter Nemesis. As a Apes fan i feel ashamed and to see this movie inIMDb top 250 makes me even more sad, and I have basically sold off allmy Apes paraphernalia on Ebay. And let me tell you that crap didn'tfetch much.Serkis needs a new sportscar, hence this mashup, which can also becalled an overlong Apples Computer commercial which we pay to see.As Hollywood movies got infested with and are now replete with shallowplots, feminism and fart gags for the kiddies, I was hoping that theA.P.E.s franchise would escape from the same demise. Planet of theApes: The Tim Burton cash-grab was actually the foreboding film thatthis last bastion protecting normal non-Bollywood filmdom was beingreconnoitered for a full-scale assault by greedy executives. Nemesiswas an experiment for this movie. Hollywood believed that if the Burtoncash-grab got a good reception it would pave the way for a new Planetof the Apes. Burton's butchering didn't get a good reception fromanyone liking the original Planet of the Apes but it got great reviewsfrom 15 year olds who like seeing a stream of CCI environments on thescreen."Planet of the Apes (2011)" is not Planet of the Apes. It is a passableaction movie and that is all. In fact, most of the battle scenes areoverdone and make the viewer think he's watching a crate of fireworksthat has gone off. This alone means the movie cannot co-exist in aman's mind juxtaposed with the idea of Planet of the Apes. Nor can itbe considered a new type of Planet of the Apes because that wouldrequire radically altering the original's definition.Like "The Dark Knight", this movie seeks to replace vital elementswhich were present in every title before it. "The Dark Knight" was amisrepresentation of Batman and this movie is no different.Commonalities which are inherent to Planet of the Apes and which areexpected by the viewer so he can concentrate on the plot, are gone. Themost conspicuous of these changes is in the characters.Again, it must be emphasised that if these weren't supposed to beestablished Planet of the Apes characters there would be no issues, other than the big one of sending a very bad message to schoolchildren.I shan't countenance the ruin of a great franchise. This film suffersfrom serious defects and it is a disgrace to have the Planet of theApes name associated with it.

Terrible

This is a bad movie folks. I don't understand why everyone else lovesit so much, personally I just think nothing else good was out aroundthe time. The only planet of the apes movie I've ever seen prior tothis one is the Tim Burton one and even though the ending of that onemade me kind of angry, I still enjoyed it. In Rise of the Planet of theApes I just didn't connect with any of the characters, they all seemedshallow to me. You're supposed to FEEL something for one side or theother and I could of cared less whether the apes got annihilated or ifthey took over the human race and emerged victorious. The ending waslame too. (SPOILER) Okay so at the end the monkeys run off into thewoods, then it's roll the credits. Really? That's it? At this point themonkeys are a few hundred or something in number, and they justransacked a city. Oh well, we've got nuclear weapons, automatic machineguns, and a far superior military, but let's just lay down and die. They just ransacked a city, but we're not going to go after them withtanks and machine guns, we'll wait until they become powerful and canoverthrow us. Stupid. Gollum played Caesar. Who cares? Give me ahundred bucks instead of millions and I can make some chimp sounds too.Everyone is raving about him in the reviews. He made some chimp sounds.Yeah. Great. Give him an Oscar.I hated this movie. So much in fact that I made an account so I couldwrite a review. I am REALLY hard to disappoint when it comes to moviesbut this stinker was so bad I had to write a review.I like franco and lithgow(was happy to see him again after so long) buttheir characters are easily forgettable. If Franco's character had died it would have MADE the movie. Caesarshould have killed him at the end or something. THAT would have beencool. He was just some sissy running after his pet chimp the wholetime. He should have died, lol. Maybe I sound like a lunatic but theplanet of the apes movies are based off of the whole gloom and doomidea, this movie didn't end with that feel to it.Let Christopher Nolan take a shot at the sequel and maybe I'll check itout.

Soulful but not suspenseful

No monkey movie (sorry, Caesar!) is ever going to recapture the twosublime shocks in the Charlton Heston original: the first time he (andwe) heard an ape speak, and the electrifying moment when he discoveredwhat planet he was on. RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES has an uphillbattle to dazzle us, just as the 2001 remake of the original did. Yes,the CGI is brilliant (and clearly the whizz-kids deserve most of thecredit for the "motion capture" technique), but there are quite a fewscenes, especially during the Golden Gate sequence, when the apes dostill look like men in monkey-suits, much as they did (and were) in1968.Are we meant to think the Andy Serkis Caesar is the Roddy McDowellCaesar from the original series or an ancestor of his? Rome had manyCaesars; and so may Hollywood if the box office justifies it! Since theinfant chimp learns sign-language whilst still a toddler, we are notgoing to be too amazed if he acquires vocal skills. There goes surprisenumber one. Since we know what planet we're on, an alternative surprisenumber two needs to be scripted, and the ape rebellion is territorycovered in several of the earlier movies. The end appears to rewritethe scenario that led to Charlton Heston learning what was written inthe sand, so maybe we're meant to see this as a reinvention rather thanas a prequel, like Daniel Craig's take on 007 in CASINO ROYALE.RISE OF ETC is fairly predictable and lacking in suspense. JohnLithgow, as Franco's dad in the throes of Alzheimer's, gets more tendermoments than Caesar does, although this is a much more emotional, evensoulful chimp than we're used to. But, overall, this movie is anotherof the summer blockbuster "duds".
